About Denmark
The official name of Denmark is the Kingdom of Denmark and it is a Nordic country. Denmark is a Scandinavian country comprising the Jutland Peninsula and numerous islands. It’s linked to nearby Sweden via the Öresund Bridge. Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and it is also the largest city in the country. With historical palaces and gardens and the world-famous Tivoli amusement park in downtown Copenhagen, it is the most visited of all Nordic cities.
The southernmost of the Scandinavian nations, it is south-west of Sweden and south of Norway, and bordered to the south by Germany. The Kingdom of Denmark also comprises two autonomous constituent countries in the North Atlantic Ocean: the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Denmark proper consists of a peninsula, Jutland, and an archipelago of 443 named islands, with the largest being Zealand, Funen and the North Jutlandic Island. The islands are characterized by flat, arable land and sandy coasts, low elevation and a temperate climate.
The country has a total land area of 42,924 square kilometers with a total population of 5.75 million inhabitants. The Kingdom of Denmark also includes the self-governing territories of the Faroe Islands and Greenland in the North Atlantic Ocean. Denmark is a relatively flat country with the highest natural point, Møllehøj, rising to just 170.86 m (561 ft) and the country’s average height above sea level is only 31 m (102 ft). Around 65% of Denmark is farmland and 11% woodlands. Denmark also has many beautiful beaches around its coastline.
The official currency of Denmark is Danish krone. The official language is Danish and other recognized regional languages are Faroese, Greenlandic and German. Denmark is part of the European Union, but the country decided to retain its own currency the Danish krone.
Situated at the gateway between northern and western Europe, Denmark may be a relatively small country, but it’s a heavyweight study destination.
